Our Story
St. Boniface is a Catholic church located in Germantown, IL.
The first settlers arrived here in 1833 from Westphalia and Hanover in Germany. They left German because of the political situation and the poor economy. The first settlement was known as Hanover simply beacuse everyone spoke German, ate German food, and followed German customs. Living in this town was lamost lik being in Germany. So before long, the name Hanover was dropped and it was simply called Germantown. Facing great obstacles and difficulties, these pioneers founded a community and a church that continues to thrive today.
The very first entries in parish records are from the hand of the first pastor at Germantown, Fr. J.H. Fortmann, dated 1834. And so Germantown, the first German Catholic community established in Clinton County, became known as "The Mother Church of Clinton County".
